Cleveland right hand Shane Bieber had an MRI scan of his sore right arm Friday and, while the Guardians didn’t immediately place him on the injured list, they announced he would miss at least one start.

Bieber was scheduled to pitch in Pittsburgh on Monday. Now the team is waiting for test results to determine his future.

Guardians manager Terry Francona said, “Over the last month or so, (his) arm has been a bit irritable but we felt he was trending in the right direction. To (some) start there I think we kept him to like. 80 pitches but mate last (start), he was uncomfortable with the way he got back up.

Bieber is 5-6 with a 3.77 ERA in 19 starts this year, but he’s 0-3 with a 5.22 ERA in his last five games.

He most recently bowled on Sunday, when he gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings during the visiting 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Bieber strikes six without taking the streets out.

Bieber, 28, is the winner of the 2020 American League Cy Young Award after going 8-1 with a 1.63 ERA in 12 games during the pandemic’s short season. The two-time All-Star has a 59-32 career record with a 3.26 ERA in 132 games (130 starts).
