San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado recorded his 300th career home run on Saturday to continue his July surge in loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Homer Machado of Matt Strahm (6-3) for an eighth inning lead in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader put the Padres up 4-3 in a game they eventually lost 6-4. It was Machado’s eighth home run of the month and fourth in the last three games.
What he’s done in the last few weeks has been hot, said Padres manager Bob Melvin.
Machado became the 11th active player to hit the 300 home run milestone. Three other players — Nolan Arenado, Freddie Freeman and JD Martinez — have also reached the 300 rating this season.
Of the 18 third basemen to achieve the feat, only Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews has made it to No. 300 at a younger age than Machado, who turns 31 on July 6.
“He was really excited,” Melvin said. “Now he has just over 50 RBI just halfway through. What he has done the last few weeks – I don’t want to say you expect it from him; it’s hot.”
Overall, Machado is hitting . 260 with 17 home runs and 51 RBI this season.
