Netflix updated the ‘Profile Transfer’ feature so that users can switch to existing accounts

Netflix updated its profile transfer feature to allow members to switch to their existing corporate accounts noted today in a blog post. Now, users can transfer their profile preferences to another existing account instead of starting a new one.

“Starting today, the profile transfer feature has been updated to allow transfers to existing accounts (instead of requiring a new account),” Netflix wrote.

Streamer rolled out the update, which is a “highly requested feature”, to all global members today, a Netflix spokesperson told Zero2Billions.

Here’s how it works:

Select the profile icon and select “Profile Transfer” Click on the “Existing Account” option to transfer your profile Enter the email address and password for the account to which you want to transfer Members will be notified by email that the profile has been transferred to their account

The profile transfer feature was launched in October 2022, which encourages members to create new accounts and transfer their personal data such as customized recommendations, watch history, favorite lists and more. It was a precursor to the Netflix password-sharing crackdown, where users were required to pay $7.99/month for an additional membership if they did not live in the same household as the account holder.

We can see this update being useful for users who are transitioning from living with their parents to sharing an account with a significant other or roommates. However, note that if a user doesn’t live in the same household but still wants to transfer their profile, they will be added as an additional member and charged a monthly fee.

Despite the online uproar over the new paid sharing initiative, Netflix is seeing nearly 100,000 daily sign-ups three days after the streaming giant announced new password sharing rules, according to research firm Antenna.
